The key to healthy plants is good soil. Because the native soil is almost entirely sand, a six to eight inch layer of compost was the first step in landscaping. The small plants and shrubs are planted directly in the compost. The planting hole for trees and shrubs is a mixture of the native soil and compost.

All plants are selected for low water requirements. Native plants include Wood's Rose, Currant, Mountain Mahogany, Western Juniper, Sage and Tamarack. Low water plants include: Penstimon, Lavender, Mock Orange, Sage, Oregano, Thyme, Artemesia, Blue Fescue and Oat Grass.

A small Juniper tree and three Currants were rescued from a nearby lot before excavation.

A simple drip irrigation system supplies water directly to the root zone, and is controlled by a timer.
