Insulated concrete forms are gaining popularity among builders. ICFs surround structural concrete with foam insulation. A product by Composite Technologies Corporation turns that idea inside out. CTC makes a unique, pre-engineered building panel that sandwiches extruded polystyrene rigid insulation between two layers of concrete. Called a Thermomass Building System, it can be used with tilt-up, precast, modular precast and poured-in-place construction. To position insulation in the middle, CTC uses their patented fiber composite connector that holds the insulation in position and ties the two layers of concrete together for added strength. The plastic connector adds very little heat loss through the insulation. The insulation thickness can be varied to achieve the desired insulation level. Because the insulation is embedded in the concrete, there's no additional cost to cover and protect it. The system can be used for residential and commercial construction.
