Retrofit Foam System

The Mississauga, Ontario-based Icynene, Inc. has released a slow-reacting version of its Icynene spray insulation. The new product is designed to be blown into the wall cavities of existing homes.

Spray equipment injects the liquid into wall cavities through small holes drilled in the plaster or wallboard. The liquid then expands to 60 times its liquid volume, starting at the bottom and expanding upwards until it completely fills the wall cavity. Because the foam remains fluid and expands upward in the direction of least resistance, it will not damage the wall.

The Icynene system fills all gaps and crevices between building materials, creating a barrier against air infiltration and moisture movement. Because it sticks to virtually any material, Icynene Insulation can be sprayed onto irregular surfaces, as well as onto the underside of floors. According to the manufacturer, it can also be sprayed over metal air conditioning ducts that pass through the attic.
