Last year saw healthy growth in sales of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), according to a report published in May by the Worldwatch Institute (WWI). According to the report, global sales of CFLs reached 240 million units in 1995, a 15 percent increase over the previous year. Sales increased by 10 percent in North America, by 50 percent in Eastern Europe and by 31 percent in developing countries. WWI credited the growth in developing countries to government demand-side management programs.
