Tamarack Technologies continues to develop sophisticated, yet practical home ventilation products. Here are two of the newer ones.

Whole-House Cooling Fan

Before the days of central air conditioning it was the ceiling-mounted, whole-house fan that offered the ultimate in home cooling comfort. Of course, that was in the 1940s. Whole-house fans still make sense for cooling under many conditions. However, the 1940s technology has several serious drawbacks, such as almost unbearable noise, inefficient fan motors and heat loss through the fan opening during the heating season.

Tamarack's HV1000 Whole-house Cooling Fan addresses all these shortcomings. Two small, 500 cfm blowers have a noise rating of only three sones, less than many kitchen range hoods and bath fans. Together the motors draw only 72 watts, compared to as much as 700 watts for a typical 30-inch fan. To block heat loss, the HV1000 has motorized doors made of two inches of Celotex Thermax rigid insulation. The fan requires a rough opening 14 x 22 inches.

Airetrak Ventilation Control

One issue with residential controlled ventilation systems (not the whole-house variety mentioned above) is control. The general ventilation requirement can be as low as 60 cfm for a family of four. A fan sized for that purpose would not have nearly enough flow to clear water vapor or odors from bathrooms and kitchens. Tamarack's answer to these problems is the Airetrak fan control.

It offers speed control, so that a larger fan can be installed to meet both general and spot ventilation needs. You can adjust the fan down to 30 percent of full speed for general ventilation. If a boost in air flow is needed, occupants push the green button for 20 minutes of high speed operation. The built-in timer can engage the high speed for a user-specified amount of time each hour. There is no "off" position, so the fan operates continuously at the lower speed. The Airetrak works with many newer fans, but you should call for a list of compatible models.
