Ozone-friendly AC from Carrier

The world's first ozone-friendly residential air conditioner was announced earlier this year by Carrier Corporation. The breakthrough was made possible by their new "Millennium" scroll compressor, which was specifically designed to work with HFC-134a refrigerant. According to Carrier, the WeatherMaker 134a (38TN) also distinguishes itself, because 30 percent of its overall structure is made from recycled materials.

These units have SEER ratings as high as 12.0. Capacities range from 24,000 to 48,000 Btu/hr.

Air flows freely through the outdoor unit, which makes efficient use of fan energy and reduces noise. Compressor noise is further reduced by mounting it on a vibration isolator plate and wrapping it in a sound hood. The total sound rating is 7.6 bels.

Carrier says the 38TN is no more difficult to install or maintain than other models, but contractors should have some special training.
